Kimi
Räikkönen wasn't completely satisfied with the performance of
his Ferrari F2008 after the first practice day of the Hungarian
Grand Prix in Budapest. He nevertheless doesn't assess his
situation too badly.
The
morning started still promising with both Ferrari drivers on the
top of the timesheets. While Felipe Massa was the fastest man on
track with a time of 1:20.981 minutes, Kimi achieved the second
place after a total of 21 driven laps. The Finn was 0.364 seconds
slower than his team mate with his lap time of 1:21.345 minutes.
The two McLaren drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton
followed on the third and fourth position.
In
the second free practice it was Lewis Hamilton who set the pace.
The McLaren Mercedes driver showed a good performance and set in
1:20.554 minutes the fastest lap time of the day. Also Kimi was
able to improve his performance from the morning session, but his
time of 1:21.009 minutes sufficed only for the fifth place at the
end of the day. After a total of 36 completed laps he had a gap of
0.455 seconds on Lewis Hamilton. The Renault team surprisingly was
very strong at the first practice day in Hungary, whose drivers
achieved the second and fourth place. Kimi's team mate Felipe
Massa finished the second free practice on the sixth place.
“We
worked on various set-up options for the car. I also tried the new
engine cover, but it is hard to assess it in any detail. The
situation is not too bad, the car handles better, but our main
rivals seem to be still a little bit quicker than us, even if
there is the usual question mark over any difference in the fuel
loads. There is still room for improvement and we will concentrate
all our efforts on this in preparing for qualifying and the
race.”
