With
a good first practice day at the Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo,
Kimi could put the first foundation stone for a successfull race
in the principality today.
While
Kimi was able to distance his team mate Felipe Massa quite clearly
today, McLaren's Lewis Hamilton crystallized out as possible main
opponent for the race on Sunday.
Already
in the first free practice it were Kimi and Lewis who set the pace
in the streets of Monte Carlo. Kimi completed a total of 26 laps
in this practice session and he finally set in 1:15.948 minutes
the fasest lap. Lewis Hamilton were placed right behind him on the
second place with a gap of 0.269 seconds. Kimi's team mate Felipe
Massa achieved with his time of 1:16.292 minutes the fourth place
behind Heikki Kovalainen in the McLaren Mercedes.
Kimi
then could improve again in the second free practice, but he
failed on the record of Lewis Hamilton. The british McLaren pilot
set in 1:15.140 minutes the fastest lap time of the first practice
day and refered Nico Rosberg and Kimi on the second and third
place. After a total of 42 driven laps Kimi achieved a time of
1:15.572 and therefore he was 0.432 seconds slower than Hamilton.
Kimi's team mate Felipe Massa was again on the fourth place after
setting a lap time of 1:15.869 minutes.
"I
would say this was a normal day of free practice. We went quite
well, especially on used tyres in the morning. But we struggled a
bit to do a time on new tyres in the second session and now we
have to look at the data carefully to understand how to improve.
There is plenty of time to do that and so I am not particularly
worried, at least at the moment. A wet race? It would make matters
complicated but it would be the same for everyone."
