Kimi
Räikkönen experienced a perfect weekend at the Spanish Grand
Prix in Barcelona. The Pole Position on Saturday as well as the
fastest race lap and the victory in today's race supported is
ambitions for the championship title.
Kimi
had a perfekt start and defended his pole position, while behind
him his team mate Felipe Massa passed Fernando Alonso and replaced
the Spaniard on the third place. But because of an accident the
Safety-Car was deployed already in the second lap. Kimi claimed
his lead once more at the restart in lap four ahead of Massa,
Alonso and Hamilton.
Kimi
could gradually extend his lead on Felipe Massa by more than seven
seconds in the following laps. He then completed his first pitstop
in lap 20 and returned to the track on the eighth position.
However, already two laps later Kimi then improved on the second
place behind Nick Heidfeld, after some other drivers also had
absolved their own pitstop. A heavy crash of Heikki Kovalainen in
lap 23 had the consequence that the Safety Car was deployed until
the track was clean again in lap 29. In the meantime Nick Heidfeld
also absolved his first pitstop and Kimi took over the lead again.
Kimi
mastered the restart in lap 29 perfectly. He now led the field
ahaed of his team mate Felipe Massa and the McLaren Mercedes
driver Lewis Hamilton. He was able to pull ahead from his pursuers
a little and distanted Felipe Massa by almost four seconds. Kimi
then completed his second pitstop in lap 47. However, he didn't
have to pass on the leadership of the race, because also Hamilton
and Massa absolved their own pitstop in the same lap or one lap
before.
Kimi
finally defended his lead up to the checkered flag and could
celebrate his second season victory after Malaysia with that.
Kimi's team mate Felipe Massa finished second in the race and the
McLaren Mercedes driver became third.
Kimi
remained first in the championship with 29 points now and has a
nine point lead on Lewis Hamilton, who has 20 points on his
account.
"It
would be hard to do better than this! Yesterday pole, today the
win, rounded off with a second place for Felipe. We are leading
both championships which I'm happy about. The whole weekend went
well and we managed to get the result we came here for. It was not
an easy win, but what matters is the ten points, not the lead you
have when you cross the line. I did not get a perfect start, but
it was enough to keep the lead and then we tried to control the
situation. The two Safety Car periods complicated things slightly,
wiping out the lead we had built up in the first part, but we
never lost the lead of the race. The car handled very well and had
a great balance. We are leading the world championship, but we
know we cannot let up at all: it takes nothing to drop down the
order. Heikki's accident? I was very happy when the team told me
he was alright and that's the most important thing."
